As part of the 2014 Folkenstone Triennial, we designed the interactive tool whithervanes.com in collaboration with the research and practice-driven design studio rootoftwo.

The physical Whithervanes installation is a network of five headless chickens that combine interactive features (using Raspberry Pi) to respond to public fear in the news. This “fear” is a result of a special algorithm that combines an online Reuters news feed and a language-based evaluation system designed by rootoftwo.

Our prototype site encourages public interaction with the chickens by sending tweets with associated hashtags (#keepcalm or #skyfalling) that influence the way “fear” is introduced to the system. Our data visualization allows site visitors to contribute their votes and watch the chickens change, in real time, on a simple bird’s eye view dashboard.
