Given our commitment to positive social impact, we’re always ready for opportunities to create more accessible public resources. With this “How to Choose a School” piece, we worked with our collaborators at Excellent Schools Detroit and the Detroit Parent Network to research, write, and design a print and digital guide. Offering a few key steps, this tool helps demystify the complicated process of selecting a school in Detroit's vast "schools of choice" landscape.
We began the process by conducting interviews with parents and caregivers at various Detroit schools, from public to charter, to understand what the real issues and challenges are. Through our participatory design process, we seek to understand families’ concerns before making assumptions about what approach will be the most effective.
Our communication strategy reveals the process of choosing a school in four direct, non-threatening steps. It encourages the parent or caregiver to ask questions and find the school that best fits their student’s needs. With great feedback from parents, educators, administrators, and our partners, we personalized and humanized the experience of determining a child’s best school choice. The piece was printed in a quantity of 20,000 and distributed door-to-door alongside a range of Detroit Parent Network resources.
