For the 18th Annual Allied Media Conference, we embarked on a highly collaborative process with our long-time partners, Allied Media Projects, to update the visual identity of the conference. This new look began with a participatory design process involving many stakeholders that is reflective of the AMC’s core values of collaborative organizing. Our process began by convening a group of key stakeholders, AMC attendees and AMP staff. Through a series of design labs, we listened to how the group responded to prompts like “what’s working about the AMC’s current visuals and messages?” and “what visuals best represent the future vision of the AMC?” Design lab participants also used collage and “mood words” to inspire the colors, shapes and tone of the refreshed design and messaging strategies.
We also created a “future AMC” story to use as a framework for developing the visual language of the conference:
The AMC is a force where individual minds meet and connect. Ideas intersect and meld to form something continuous and organic. This new 'thing' is more structured and stronger. At the conference, we form networks that have the power to change and grow. We build relationships that are flexible yet strong. From young to elder, the conference is accessible and accommodating for all. It is a multidimensional space where people combine visions and collaborate in many ways.
We deployed the fresh visuals in print and digital marketing materials throughout the conference, including for the program book, signage for wayfinding, social media posts, website graphics, and all other conference materials. Download the program book. We received positive feedback about the new look and, as a testament to its inclusivity and careful consideration, one conference attendee said:
“I wanted to say that I truly admire the work that you all do as designers, and the impact you all seek to have through design. I was … blown away when I attended the (AMC) conference and received the deliverables, and saw the signage, and wayfinding solutions. I must thank you all for the work that you all do. The inviting colors and typography you all used to brand such a great conference, made my experience that much better… know that you all, a collective of great women in design, are appreciated.”
