The Detroit Digital Justice Coalition is comprised of people and organizations in Detroit who believe that communication is a fundamental human right. It is securing that right through activities that are grounded in the digital justice principles of: access, participation, common ownership, and healthy communities.
We worked with the Coalition to design and host DiscoTechs (Discovering Technology) mobile multimedia workshop fairs. Participants typically learn more about the impact and possibilities of technology within our communities and take part in interactive workshops ranging from basic electronics, solar energy, and computer literacy to media making. These drop-in workshops are folded into conversations about digital justice and telecommunication policy. This particular DiscoTech also featured an intro workshop to openFrameworks where attendees experimented with building new systems for interaction that move away from the screen and into physical space.
