Graphic Design to Support Early Childhood Spaces with IFF
WITH IFF
Making research accessible, crafting a narrative, and graphic design
IFF is a Community Development Financial Institution that strengthens nonprofits and communities through investments in real estate, research, and capacity building. In Detroit and across the Midwest, they have been a key partner in expanding access to quality early childhood education by helping providers improve the spaces where children learn and grow.
The Work Department partnered with IFF to create tools that help early childhood educators, administrators, and advocates understand how learning environments support brain development. We wrote and designed a narrative-driven slide deck and printed postcard that bring the research to life in a clear and accessible way.
Together, we shaped a story around Shontelle, a three-year-old whose brain is rapidly developing. Her experience helps illustrate how indoor environmental quality, physical space, and environmental stimuli influence how children feel, learn, and grow. We developed content that connects research insights with practical recommendations, and designed a visual system that combines photography, illustration, and bold color to support learning and engagement.
Throughout the process, we collaborated with IFF to refine the structure, tone, and design. The final tools are being used in presentations and trainings to help educators and decision makers see how thoughtful design can make a lasting impact on children.
